Fleet Bank Will Launch Computer Pilot Program for Low-Income Boston Residents.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Dec. 6--Fleet Bank, criticized for years for not investing enough in low-income neighborhoods, is unveiling a unique pilot program today that's intended to bring computers, computer training, and Internet access to residents of those areas.

Fleet's corporate parent, FleetBoston Financial Corp., plans to help bridge the technology gap by giving a first wave of equipment and training to 600 customers in Roxbury and an equal number in a low-income section of Trenton, N.J.

Fleet plans to expand the pilot program to include 3,000 customers by the end of 2001, including 600 people apiece in the Grove Hall and Uphams Corner neighborhoods of Boston.

"This is just the beginning for us," said Gail Snowden, director of community banking at Fleet....
