Fast Trains' Future in North Carolina Linked to Freight Rail.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Dec. 5--The freight railroads that couldn't shed passenger service fast enough in mid-century are now the key to bringing high-speed trains to the Southeast and helping North Carolina meet its goal of zipping travelers from Raleigh to Charlotte in two hours.

In recent years, freight railroads have jealously guarded their steel highways for fear that faster, more frequent passenger trains would slow freight operations, lead to more accidents or increase their liability.

But CSX Corp. and Norfolk Southern Corp. officials are starting to embrace the idea of 110-mph Amtrak service on their railroads -- if the state and federal governments will pay for new tracks and better signaling, which would benefit them, too.
