Economic Downturn Affecting Indiana Unevenly.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Dec. 14--Although indicators still point to a "soft landing" for the Indiana economy, some industries might take hard hits, experts say.

"We're definitely in a slowdown right now," said Patrick Kiely, president of the Indiana Manufacturers Association. "How much of a slowdown depends on what sector you're in."

The heavy-equipment sector, for example, is already in "hard-landing mode," Kiely said. The auto and transportation industries could suffer the same fate, he said.

The next 60 to 90 days will determine how much steam the economy loses, and how much the state will suffer, he said.

Almost daily, it seems, new statistics show weakness in some area of the economy.
