Qualcomm to Pay $80 Million to South Korean Institute.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Dec. 12--SAN DIEGO, Calif.--Qualcomm officials said Monday that the company would pay $80 million in back royalty payments to a South Korean research institute and $16 million per year following a ruling by an international arbitration panel.

The payments are to be made to the Korean Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute and relate to a 1992 technology development agreement between Qualcomm and the institute. That year, the institute received a CDMA system from Qualcomm and institute engineers began building a CDMA network for commercial use.
