Dec. 16--Two years after a deadly outbreak of food-borne illness linked to hot dogs and deli meats from the Bil Mar Foods plant in Michigan, a Texas plant of Cargill Turkey Products is recalling 16.7 million pounds of poultry products because of possible contamination with the same bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes.

The recall by the Waco manufacturer, announced Thursday, is the biggest since a deadly outbreak of illness linked to Bil Mar put listeria in the national spotlight in late 1998 and early 1999.

Like the Bil Mar recall, the possible contamination of Cargill meats by the potentially deadly Listeria monocytogenes bacteria strain was not discovered by internal testing by Cargill. The recall was prompted by reports of illness to the U.S. Centers...
