Idaho Contractor Earns Good Evaluation from Department of Energy.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Dec. 14--The site's new contractor received overall good marks and praise from its federal boss in an evaluation for its second six months on the job.

The Department of Energy will pay Bechtel BWXT Idaho $17.5 million for its work from April to September. That's about $5 million more than former contractor Lockheed Martin got for the second half of its first year.

The award is calculated by measuring the company's progress in meeting specific goals, which range from moving waste into safer storage to improving safety programs to identifying gaps in scientific knowledge where research needs to be done.

The contractor essentially got perfect scores in 75 of the 93 areas that the DOE tracks. The company got 88.4 percent of the money it could...
