Chemical Company's Grant to Indiana University Targets Genetic Mysteries.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Dec. 15--Dr. David W. Crabb and his team of scientists at the Indiana University School of Medicine are working hard to discover why alcohol affects people in different ways. Some people have a higher risk of developing a drinking problem. Some drinkers get liver disease, and some don't.

The answers to Crabb's quest might be found in genomics, the study of the genetic materials found in a single cell or a complete organism. Lilly Endowment pledged $105 million Thursday to help Crabb and hundreds of other IU researchers unravel this and other genetic mysteries.

The grant, which will finance a new project known as the Indiana Genomics Initiative, is the largest grant ever received by the university and the largest gift ever awarded by Lilly Endowment....
