Microsoft Case Sets New Rules for Treating Temporary Workers.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Dec. 16--As soon as news broke this week that Microsoft Corp. would pay $96.9 million to settle two lawsuits brought by workers who charged that the software giant classified them as temporary employees to deny them benefits, San Francisco employment lawyer Jeff Tanenbaum's phone started ringing.

"The reaction has been, `Oh my God, what do we need to do with regard to our temporary workers and independent contractors,"' Tanenbaum said. "This really is a wake-up call for employers to review their contingent worker relationships and to make some determinations as to how to treat these relationships in the future."
