Detroit Newspapers Try to Win Back Readers.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Dec. 19--If you received a free copy of the Detroit Free Press or Detroit News on Monday morning, you weren't alone.

Detroit Newspapers, the company that produces and distributes the two daily papers, gave away about 70,000 copies Monday, mostly in blue-collar neighborhoods.

It was the first step in a massive effort to rebuild circulation in the wake of a final settlement of the 5 1/2-year labor dispute that included a 19-month strike.

Monday's papers carried banner headlines proclaiming an end to the labor dispute. Two Teamsters units, Locals 372 and 2040, ratified contracts Sunday to end the conflict.
