Dec. 19--South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. is asking the state Public Service Commission for its third rate increase for natural gas in five months.
That increase would raise the average gas bill $127.70 per year.
The PSC will consider the 19.25 percent request at 10:30 a.m. today. If approved, the new rates for residential customers would be effective Jan. 1.
SCE&G cited steady increases in the price it pays for natural gas.
"We now have to pay up to three times as much for natural gas as we did a year ago," said SCE&G spokesman Roger Schrum.
Schrum said the company must pass the higher costs on to its 262,000 gas customers, including residents and businesses throughout much of South Carolina.
