AT&T Slashes Stock Dividend by 83 Percent, Issues Profit Warning.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Dec. 21--Delivering a double whammy to shareholders, AT&T Corp. yesterday slashed its cherished stock dividend by 83 percent for the fourth quarter and issued its third profit warning of the year.
Never before in its more than 100-year history had AT&T reduced its quarterly payout to shareholders, a track record almost unparalleled in American business history.
The dividend, used by "widows and orphans" not to mention thousands of retirees in New Jersey for income, survived the turn of two centuries, the Great Depression and two World Wars. But it couldn't withstand a sudden downdraft in the fortunes of the largest telephone and cable television company that was only underscored by the profit warning yesterday.
