UPS Sees Huge Increase in Package Deliveries the Week Before Christmas.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Dec. 21--SAN MARCOS, Calif.--The workers at United Parcel Service know Santa Claus doesn't have a monopoly on delivering Christmas gifts by air.

During the holiday season, two jets -- a DC-8 and a 727 -- leave San Diego International Airport each night full of packages, UPS division manager Kevin Hahn said Wednesday. One jumbo jet comes in, laden with packages for delivery from one end of the county to the other.

"You are past the point where you can ship a ground package and get it much further than a day away. We are going to have two more days where, on the ground, we can get it (delivered). If you have procrastinators you can get it delivered with the more expensive two-day air," said Hahn, who is from Iowa and is enjoying his first snowless...
