Dec. 22--In his gentle way, Tony Softli reminds visitors of a paradox about Santa Claus.

Though Santa is often depicted as white, there are nearly as many Santa faces as there are cultures on the Earth. To many, Santa's face is no matter. And yet, imagining a generous, loving gift-giver whose face reflects your culture matters a great deal to many parents and their children.

Nordstrom's downtown Seattle Santa display, where Softli has entertained many a child, has been one place to watch this paradox play out this holiday season.

Andrew David and Marilyn Sherron brought their daughter, Analise, 2 1/2, to sit on Softli's knee this week, in part, because Santa and child both are black.
