Dec. 28--DENTON, Texas--County officials are pushing to establish the first Amtrak station in Denton County, and the only stop between Fort Worth and Gainesville.

The proposed Amtrak stop would be in Sanger, a northern Denton County town of 5,300 people, soon to undergo a metamorphosis with the coming of a $1.8 billion, 3,500-acre retirement community with golf courses and hotels.

Jack Smith, Sanger city manager, and Selvin Green, the New York developer of The Gardens at Lake Ray Roberts, say they are working to persuade Amtrak to stop its Heartland Flyer train in Sanger.

"Amtrak already runs through our town," Mr. Smith said. "Why not have them stop here?"
