Hamburg, N.Y., Auto Plant Waits for Ripple Effect from Ford Closings.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Dec. 29--While Ford Motor Co. plans to idle some of its vehicle assembly plants next month, its stamping plant in Hamburg is still waiting to see what ripple effect it might feel from the closings.

Ford said Thursday that its first-quarter North American vehicle production will be 17 percent less than a year ago. That cutback figures to have some impact on the Hamburg plant, which makes components that go into virtually all Ford, Lincoln and Mercury cars or trucks made in the continent. But exactly what impact remains to be seen.

Though Ford has scheduled temporary shutdowns of some of its vehicle assembly plants next month, the automaker hasn't yet determined how plants such as Hamburg's will be affected, said Kathleen Hamilton, a Ford spokeswoman....
