Thomson Multimedia to Acquire Hollywood's Technicolor.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Dec. 12--Thomson Multimedia announced a tentative $2.1 billion deal Monday to buy one of the most recognized companies in the entertainment industry: Technicolor.

California-based Technicolor, which pioneered color movies during the 1920s, is one of the world's largest motion picture film processors and also has become one the biggest manufacturers of pre-recorded DVDs, videocassettes and computer CD-ROMs.

Monday's deal, which must be finalized, would give Thomson a significant presence in the content end of the home-entertainment industry, a first for a corporation that's best known as the maker of RCA television sets, VCRs, and other products.
