Jan. 3--I'm old enough to have seen "2001: A Space Odyssey" in a curved-screen Cinerama movie theater when Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece, which he co-wrote with Arthur C. Clarke, was first released in 1968. The experience changed me, and I still believe this film changed humanity.

The opening section, where the apes discover the monolith and the ability to use tools for killing, bored me at the time, though it's much more powerful now. So did the passage near the conclusion where Bowman, the surviving astronaut, goes through an endless, warped scenery that one reviewer aptly called "chloroform nightmares."
