Federal Prosecutors Compromise on Pollution Case against Kansas-Based Firm.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jan. 3--Attempting to simplify the pollution case against Koch Industries Inc., federal prosecutors set aside 86 counts Tuesday and asked a federal judge to move forward with 11 charges.

Officials hope the pared-down indictment against the petroleum giant satisfies U.S. District Judge Janis Jack of Corpus Christi.

Jack recently admonished government lawyers for filing a confusing, 33-page indictment that appeared to charge Koch two separate ways for the same alleged offense -- knowingly releasing too much of the carcinogen benzene into the air and water from its Corpus Christi refinery.
