Jan. 3--Wandering ever further from its core market into the fickle world of consumer electronics, Intel on Tuesday released a portable digital audio player that plays songs recorded in the popular MP3 format.

The $300 device, dubbed the Intel Pocket Concert audio player, enters a market that has exploded with the popularity of the online music-sharing program Napster, and provides a ready-made application for another Intel product -- flash memory, which stores data.

The audio player joins a growing line of digital gadgets -- including cameras for personal computers, a wireless keyboard, video game controllers and a toy microscope -- introduced in the past two years by Intel's Connected Products Group in Hillsboro.
