Jan. 7--Out on the frozen streets of Detroit, the auto industry is checking for dents and dings in its once-shiny sales machine.

The chill is on. After a record run, sales are sliding. Consumer confidence is in a skid. And the former Chrysler Corp. -- once the proud, stylish symbol of the American auto industry's remarkable resurgence -- is reeling, losing $500 million last quarter and preparing for more in 2001.

"Consumers rule, and right now, they are just a little bit uncertain," said George Pipas, sales analysis manager at Ford Motor Co. "Whenever you're in transition, as we are, it's nail-biting time."
