Jan. 13--COMPAQ CEO READY FOR NEW KIND OF COMPETITION: When Compaq Computer agreed last August to put its weight behind the Houston Marathon, CEO Michael Capellas made a weighty commitment of his own.

After a 10-year hiatus from regular exercise, the 46-year-old signed up for the race with a plan to drop some pounds. After checking with his doctor, he purchased a treadmill and started building up his mileage at home.

Growing up in Ohio, Capellas was a high school football linebacker and distance runner, and ran the half-mile in college, but he admits he let things slide.

"I was heavy," he says. "It had been on my mind for a while, and not just when I became CEO, but I realized it would be a good example I could set."
