Nortel to Lay Off Up to 300 at North Carolina Campus.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jan. 19--RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.--Nortel Networks will lay off 200 to 300 employees at Research Triangle Park in the next three months as part of the companywide restructuring it announced last week.
Some employees may be rehired for other positions within the Ontario-based company, which plans to expand its optical and wireless divisions at RTP this year, spokeswoman Joanne Latham said. With a work force of 7,509 there, Nortel is the second-largest employer at RTP, behind IBM.
"We expect our population in RTP to have modest growth," Latham said. "We feel we could hire about as many as we're letting go."
Nortel has contracted with Philadelphia-based Right Management to provide outplacement services for the laid-off employees. Right...
