Jan. 28--The North Slope gas reserves are a huge prize for Alaska's three big oil companies.
Not only is Prudhoe Bay the largest oil field in North America, it is also the largest gas field, with 25 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Another 10 trillion cubic feet is scattered among the Slope's other big fields.
Exxon Mobil is the largest gas owner on the North Slope, with 37 percent ownership of Prudhoe Bay and a significant share of the Point Thomson field. Even by the standards of the world's biggest oil and gas company, this is a big project. Exxon's only larger reserves are in Indonesia.
The company has been pushing technology to convert its gas reserves into gas-to-liquid form for the 800-mile trans-Alaska oil pipeline.
