Internet Service Provider Acquires Andover, Mass., Firm's Financial Chat Site.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jan. 31--Internet service provider Terra Lycos said it acquired the Raging Bull financial-chat Web site from CMGI Inc.'s AltaVista unit after its owners proved unable to capitalize on the service.

Exact terms of the all-cash deal weren't disclosed, though a source said Terra Lycos paid less than $15 million for the unit, which it plans to combine with its existing financial-services offerings.

The sum represents just a fraction of the $163 million that Andover-based CMGI reportedly paid for Raging Bull in 1999, near the peak of CMGI's stock value. At the time CMGI was trying to build up AltaVista as a rival to the portal services offered by Lycos but never obtained the traffic gains it once hoped for.
