California-Based Ariba to Acquire Maker of Online Collaboration Software.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jan. 30--Ariba Inc., a maker of software for online transactions, said Monday it will acquire Agile Software Corp. for $2.5 billion in stock in a bid to expand its portfolio of business-to-business technologies used over the Internet.
The purchase of Agile, which provides online collaboration software, comes after Mountain View-based Ariba said earlier this month that it expects sales growth to slow during the quarter. It also follows last year's downturn in stock prices of business-to-business companies, once hyped by Wall Street as the Net's next big thing.
