Appeals Court Tells Napster to Curb Online Music Trades.

Feb. 13--Millions of Napster users who spent the weekend downloading music out of fear that their free-for-all would soon end got the bad news Monday -- a federal appeals court panel in San Francisco ordered the Internet song-swap service to stop the trading of copyrighted material.

Although the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals continued to stay an injunction until a lower court can modify it to satisfy the judges, the court's long-awaited decision strongly suggests the days of free music downloads courtesy of Napster Inc. are numbered.

How much longer Napster can stay in business will depend on how long it takes an appeals court judge to refashion the injunction...
