Illinois Regulators Block New Area Code for Suburban Chicago.

Feb. 14--Illinois regulators on Wednesday blocked activation of a new area code for Chicago's north and northwest suburbs, rejecting a claim by the phone industry's agent that the 847 area code has exhausted its number supply.

By rebuffing NeuStar Inc.'s efforts to activate the 224 code in the 847 area, the Illinois Commerce Commission put the industry on notice that it must cooperate with efforts to conserve phone numbers and stop the proliferation of new area codes.

"I want them to know we are rejecting this," Commissioner Ruth Kretschmer said of the ICC's action. "I don't want any misunderstanding."
