Feb. 16--SALES, PROFITS SLUMP AT AMSTRAD: Sales and profit have slumped at computer firm Amstrad, as it shifts from its traditional business to home "e-mailers."
Half-year profits fell from UKpound 8.2 million to UKpound 1.5 million on sales down from UKpound 61 million to UKpound 41 million. Amstrad says it expected a loss on Amserve, its joint venture with Dixons to develop the e-mailer business. It is hoping for great things from its deal with one of China's leading mobile phone companies, Haier, which will manufacture Amstrad's phone.
Amstrad boss Sir Alan Sugar says Christmas sales of the e-mailer were "encouraging."
