Mar. 16--The Sacramento Bee has promoted veteran newsman Stuart Drown to business editor. Drown, 41, succeeds Bob Shallit who will become a senior editor and columnist for The Bee.

Drown, formerly deputy business editor, joined The Bee in 1999, after eight years with the Akron Beacon Journal. A graduate of University of California, Berkeley, Drown also has worked at the Baton Rouge (La.) State-Times and Dow Jones News Service.

In his new position, Drown will be in charge of setting the direction of local business coverage and directing a staff of 16 business writers and editors.

At the same time, The Bee promoted Donald Blount to deputy business editor.
