Race Often Plays Role in Medical Students' Assignments to Teaching Hospitals.

Mar. 23--Raul Ruiz learned yesterday that he will spend his first few years as a doctor training in surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. But the campaign to keep him in Boston began long before that.

Ruiz, 28, was born in a Spanish-speaking, migrant farming community in the Southern California desert. At the age of 4, he decided to become a doctor. And when he saw neighbors denied care because they lacked insurance, he decided to become a doctor for poor people.

"You can fight for justice through health," he said.
