Twin Falls, Idaho-Area Grain Farmers Mull Production of Rarely-Grown Oats.

Mar. 24--TWIN FALLS, Idaho--Grain producers are looking hard at making a second-string grain crop the star player in rotations across the Magic Valley this year.

Oats are a minor crop compared with wheat and barley. Last year 80,000 acres of oats were planted, and just 15,000 acres were harvested for grain. The rest was harvested as oat silage or oat hay.

In contrast, 1.3 million acres of wheat were planted and 750,000 acres of barley were planted in 2000.

But with a projected water shortage looming and the need to find a cover crop to plant on acres bid into the Idaho Power Co. buyback program, some growers are giving the nod to oats.
