University of Florida Scientists Research Genetic Engineering for Citrus Boost.

Mar. 4--LAKE ALFRED, Fla.--Researchers in this tiny Central Florida enclave are charting what could be the future of the citrus industry.
Fred Gmitter gets excited when he explains how citrus scientists are looking to genetic engineering to improve oranges.
The University of Florida scientist believes it won't be long before researchers manipulate genes to create an orange that's resistant to the tristeza virus, a disease that can be devastating to farmers. And that's just one project.
"We can do this," Gmitter said. "It will take time, but we have the foundation."
