Delta Air Lines Looks to Contain Dissension by Low-Paid `Express' Pilots.

Apr. 6--When Delta Air Lines realized throngs of its Florida passengers were defecting to low-fare competitors, including the formidable Southwest Airlines, the carrier sought to offer a cheaper alternative of its own.

So in 1996, it launched Delta Express -- a no-frills, Orlando-based unit that flies mostly between Florida and the Northeast, avoiding Delta's Atlanta hub.

A cornerstone of the operation was a concession by pilots, who agreed to a two-tiered wage system that pays Delta Express pilots about 30 percent less than their Delta counterparts, who fly the same Boeing 737-200s.
