Groton, Conn., Shipyard Workers Face Security-Clearance Backlog.

Apr. 13--GROTON, Conn.--Electric Boat officials and U.S. Rep. Rob Simmons, R-2nd District, said they were hopeful the visit by a top Pentagon official to the shipyard on Thursday will help clear up a growing backlog of EB workers who are waiting for security clearances.

EB President Michael W. Toner said of 657 employees awaiting a clearance, 321 have been waiting more than six months, and 142 have been waiting more than a year. People can work on an interim basis for up to two years, but if the backlog grows any worse it could exceed even that time limit, Toner said.
