Orange County Approves Use of New Thin, Durable Construction Material.

Apr. 13--It's thinner than a strand of hair, but stronger than steel.

A material made of finely woven threads of carbon or glass fibers -- slapped and rolled onto structures like wallpaper -- is emerging as the latest technology used to strengthen buildings, highways and bridges as property owners scramble to meet tougher seismic building codes.

County officials specified the use of the material -- up to 10 times stronger than steel -- for a $3.7 million retrofit job at John Wayne Airport in June.

California State University, Fullerton, engineers are also testing a glass and carbon composite for use on a bridge deck in Long Beach, while Caltrans...
