Savannah, Ga., Banking Operations Affected by First Union, Wachovia Merger.

Apr. 17--First Union's proposed purchase of Wachovia means several key issues about Savannah's operations must be resolved in the next few weeks.

Those issues include a headquarters location, who the local president will be, and how much duplication will be eliminated in terms of jobs and branches.

Eric R. Winger, Wachovia's Savannah City president, and Christopher E. Worel, First Union's Savannah president, say all those things are up in the air. They say they don't even know which of them -- if either -- will be in charge of local operations.

"This caught a lot of us by surprise," Winger said.
