Santa Cruz, Calif.-Based Litigant for Independent Bookstores Drops Case.

Apr. 21--"It's hard," said Neal Coonerty, the day after his American Booksellers Association gave up its court battle on behalf of independent bookstores against big chains. "I was the person who had to make the decision, and I pulled the plug."

Coonerty, president of the ABA, owner of Bookshop Santa Cruz and, most observers agree, loser in the legal battle, sat in his store Friday afternoon and talked about the case -- American Booksellers Association et al., vs. Barnes & Noble and Borders -- that has obsessed him for years.

The ABA abandoned its case in mid-trial Thursday and agreed to a $4.7 million settlement -- roughly a quarter of their legal fees. It...
