Delta Air Lines Avoids Strike, Comes to Contract Agreement with Pilots.

Apr. 23--Delta Air Lines, Orlando's dominant carrier, has reached a tentative contract deal with its pilots, averting a strike that could have shut down the airline next week.

The agreement, which would make Delta's pilots the highest paid in the industry, came just days after pessimistic company executives had warned that a quick settlement was unlikely.

The nation's No. 3 airline had expected President Bush to step in next weekend to fend off a job action.

Instead, negotiators ended the standoff Sunday without government intervention.
