Studios Demand Internet Services Block Access to Pirated Movie Programs.

Apr. 30--Oregonians using their cable modems to pirate Hollywood movies soon could receive an order telling them to knock it off or risk losing their broadband connection.

The Motion Picture Association of America, which represents the movie studios, last week began demanding that Internet service providers and universities block use of a Napster-like program called Gnutella to pirate movies over the Internet.

Some legal experts say the movie studios are on shaky ground.

Nonetheless, a company that provides cable modem service to parts of Oregon began sending cease-and-desist orders to selected customers nationwide, telling them to stop or face losing...
