Executive Goes Long Distance in Verizon's New World.

May 1--When Verizon Communications was born last year, it brought together a venerable regional Bell company, Bell Atlantic, with GTE, a non-Bell. GTE, which in the Northwest has played second fiddle to US West, suddenly was part of the nation's second-largest telecommunications company, behind AT&T.

Eileen O'Neill Odum also ascended quickly, from GTE's Northwest regional president, based in Everett, to president of national operations in New York.

Odum has become one of the highest-ranking women in the telecom industry. She runs the side of Verizon responsible for your dial tone -- installation, maintenance, construction of facilities and customer service....
