Ford Tire Program Puts Melbourne, Fla., Call Center in Overdrive.

May 25--MELBOURNE, Fla.--When the nation's Ford owners pick up the phone to ask about Firestone tires, they'll likely get routed to a building in Melbourne where a small temporary army has been recruited to provide answers.

Percepta LLC, a customer-service company partly owned by Ford Motor Co., has hired more than 400 temporary workers at $10 an hour to field questions about the automaker's plan to replace 13 million tires.

But even that may not be enough.

In a 24-hour span Wednesday -- their second day of operation -- workers handled nearly 26,500 calls from consumers asking about the free replacement of Firestone Wilderness AT tires, said Tom...
