Pennsylvania Utility Commission Endorses Verizon's Long-Distance Move.

Jun. 7--A sharply divided state Public Utility Commission Wednesday recommended that Verizon Communications Inc. be authorized to compete against AT&T and WorldCom in the Pennsylvania long-distance telephone market.

Commissioners John M. Quain, Robert K. Bloom and Aaron Wilson Jr. voted to recommend so-called Section 271 approval by the Federal Communications Commission.

Nora Mead Brownell and Terrance G. Fitzpatrick dissented. They said they believe Verizon has not met all 14 tests for proving that the local telephone market is irreversibly open to competition.
