Jun. 19--PRODUCT LIABILITY LAWYERS DON'T LIKE INDIANA: The scene in a Los Angeles courtroom was the kind that sets a corporation lawyer to gnashing his teeth:

A smiling plaintiff gives the thumbs-up sign after the jury takes his side against cigarette-maker Philip Morris. To the tune of $3 billion.

The judgment earlier this month may take its place alongside awards in other cases -- the McDonald's hot coffee incident comes to mind -- that provoke outrage over so-called courthouse lottery winnings.

It's the kind of story that grabs headlines here, but always with a faraway dateline.
