As Detroit Auto Supply Company Folds, Workers' Dream Dies.

Jun. 22--Ten years ago, Maria del Carmen Fuentes Maldonado and her husband, Alfonso Sainz, came from Los Angeles to Detroit for a friend's wedding.

That night, between dances, the couple heard about Mexican Industries. They learned that the auto supply company in Detroit not only paid better than the companies they worked for in California, but it welcomed Mexican immigrants like them.

They never returned to the West.

Mexican Industries did that to people. It was a company, sure. But it was more than that. It was a crack at the American Dream.

With little English, new immigrants, many of them from Mexico, could get a good job at Mexican...
