British Telecom, Gemini Shed 6,700 Jobs.

Jun. 27--British Telecom is to lay off up to 4,000 workers, half of them this year, in a bid to slash annual costs by UKpound 850 million by 2004.

The cuts will mainly fall in the domestic retail business, which still employs 50,000 people 17 years after privatisation.

Retail chief Pierre Danon also hinted at TV-and-tele-phone tie-ups with ONdigital and Sky, possibly within weeks, in a counterattack on the cable companies.

Despite the news BT tumbled 15 pence to 410 pence amid market gloom, as profits warnings and other job cuts offset some positive news from America, where consumer confidence, housing demand and factory orders remain stronger than expected....
