Jun. 28--Ali was having none of it, despite Nina Hagen's crooning.

"C'mon, be a good girrrl, you're such a goood girrl."

The 5-year-old mare just glared at Hagen and laid back one ear, then another. Good girl? In your oat mash, lady.

The bay-colored mare stood in a narrow holding stall, with a hole cut in the side at just the right level, so her new charge, standing on the other side, could nurse.

Just a few days ago, the foal's mother died during the delivery, after her uterus and intestines ruptured. So a new mare had to be found for the 4-day-old Knight, so named for the distinctive chess piece-shaped splotch on his forehead....
