Gas Firm Fires Up Plan for Single Rate in Rhode Island.

Jul. 4--PROVIDENCE, R.I.--The new owner of Providence Gas, Valley Gas and Bristol & Warren Gas says it wants to consolidate the three sets of rates into one and share savings from the merger with customers and stockholders.
Southern Union Co. also said it wants to allow some of its new customers of Valley and Bristol to be able to go out into the natural gas market and make their own deals. Providence has allowed such competition for industrial and commercial customers for several years.
Those goals are in an outline Southern filed with the state Division of Public Utilities and Carriers on Monday. Southern must file a more-detailed plan by Sept. 1 with the utilities...
