Microsoft Decides to Enter World of Internet Music Sales.

Jul. 13--Microsoft on Thursday jumped into the business of selling songs over the Internet, fueling the ongoing revolution in the way music is distributed and setting up a fierce battle between formidable rivals.

The move by the world's biggest software company pits Microsoft against AOL Time Warner and RealNetworks in the race to attract paying customers to download or stream music as new technologies make compact discs and other traditional recordings increasingly obsolete.

"We're at a tipping point for the downslide of the CD sale and the uptake of digital distribution of music," said Phil Leigh, digital media analyst for Raymond James & Associates.
