Chip-Equipment Makers See Record Sales Drop.

Jul. 17--SAN JOSE, Calif.--One of the bellwether sectors of the technology industry, semiconductor-equipment makers, expect sales to decline 35 percent this year, the biggest year-to-year drop ever.
It may take until 2004 for the industry to match last year's sales, according to figures in a forecast released Monday by an industry trade association. Some think it will be mid-2002 before the industry begins to climb out of its slump.
Nevertheless, the industry expects to post its second-highest year on record with $31 billion in new chip manufacturing, testing and assembly equipment in 2001, according to the midyear consensus forecast released Monday by...
