Global Personal Computer Sales Decline in Second Quarter, Say Reports.

Jul. 21--Global personal computer sales fell in the second quarter for the first time since 1986, according to reports from two PC research firms.

Dataquest Inc. of San Jose said Friday that worldwide sales dropped 1.9 percent to 30.4 million units. International Data Corp., of Framingham, Mass., said it found a 2 percent drop in a separate study.

The numbers confirm what the rest of the technology sector -- chip companies in particular -- has been signaling for months: The PC may not be dead, but reports of its demise are finally captured in the first decline in 15 years. Some analysts found no cause for hand wringing.
